Radishes, Watermelon- White skin masks a striking pink interior. This storage radish is harvested around the first frost and is kept viable for a colorful addition to dishes throughout the long winter months. While watermelon radishes do not taste like watermelons, they do resemble them. A white and green skin hides a bright pink center with touches of green around the edges. Like the center of a watermelon, the center of the watermelon radish is the sweetest, less pungent and spicy.
When raw, they can be sliced thin, into matchsticks, grated, turned into delicious pickles. Sauteing, braising, and roasting are also delicious options.
To keep your radishes nice and crunchy, store in a sealed plastic bag with a damp paper towel wrapped around them. Keep chilled in the refrigerator.
