Leeks- Leeks, Allium ampeloprasum, are an ancient crop which are native to the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Leeks are closely related to onions and share a similar flavor. Leeks have the appearance of oversized green onions or scallions. The edible portions of the plant are the white base of the leaves, extending upward to the light green portions. The darker green parts of leeks are less tasty and become more vegetative.
As leeks are closely related to onions and garlic, they share a sweet onion flavor which works wonderful to add flavor to any soup or stew. They can also be roasted or grilled with oil and seasoning and eaten on their own!
Leeks can give off an odor that can affect the taste of other foods so we recommend storing your leeks in a sealed plastic bag. Best if eaten within 2 weeks!
